Call me late, but I have just discovered Alices music. Yup, Im about 4 years late, but sometimes when checking the underground for good music, its hard to see whats on your doorstep. This Uk soul singer has an awesome voice and has made 4 lps to date: Under The Munka Moon (2004, Tru Thoughts)

Jee-zus Christ this record is good.
No title, no liner notes, no song titles - no nuffin', 'cept for 6 tracks of insanely dope psychedelic fuzz-funk featuring The Best Drummer In The World, aka Heliocentrics / Soul Destroyers sticksdude, Malcolm Catto. FUCK HE CAN DRUM! Fully loaded with a ton of bugged-out library record analogue synths, buzzing guitars and massive drums, the last LP that sounded like this was... well...Catto's own Mo'Wax LP, the criminally underrated Popcorn Bubblefish. I know absolutely nuffin' 'bout 'MRR-ADM', apart from the fact that they come from LA and have produced the best instrumental record of the year so far. It's like listening to the out-takes from Lalo Schifrin's Dirty Harry OST. Limited to a 1000 pressing, if you don't got this already, better make sure you get this shit. Essential funk and bboy listening. Live drum fans will freak over this like I did.

Sadly IZ the Wiz (Mike Martin) is no longer with us.
IZ collapsed at his brother’s home in Florida at around 3:00am Wednesday morning. He was rushed to the hospital, eventually succumbing to heart failure.

Iz The Wiz is without question one of New York City’s most prolific writers of all time. He holds the title of the All time All City King of New York City Subways, and only one person holds that prestigious honor. In aka Kill 3 is credited with the most extensive all-city bomb in NYC during 1975 and 76, but Iz was the longest reigning all-city king in NYC history, taking the title many times throughout the 1970s and 1980s. Iz was well known for his throw-ups in the mid 1970s on the IND and BMT subway divisions. In the late 1970s he broadened his focus by working on top-to-bottoms, burners and scenery whole cars on the prestigious 2 and 5 lines of the IRT subway division. During this period he simultaneously maintained all-city throw-up king status. He painted for a variety of top level crews. He has served as president of The Master Blasters and the Queens division of Prisoners Of Graffiti. He has also painted for The Odd Partners, The Crew, The Three Yard Boys and others too numerous to mention. Iz appeared in the documentary film Style Wars and portrayed a transit police detective in the film Wild Style. His work has been displayed in museums and galleries throughout the world. Iz played a major role in the development of writing and provided inspiration for every generation of writer that exists. Hailing from Queens Iz took over the city subway system line by line.
During his career, there was a time when he was doing at least 100 throw-ups every night, for an entire year. The dedication and love for writing is apparent in all of his works, from the burners on the trains, to the sketches on paper, and the canvases that capture the essence of writing, Iz often drops little side notes next to his the pieces, a little message that takes a minute to sink in and when it does, you always get a grin.
Iz is also known for his epic role played in the film Style Wars. His witty remarks remain some of the most quoted words and phrases in the writing lexicon. When just the words you have said 20 years ago are recognized and used in current conversations, you have successfully made your mark in the world. In the film Iz was asked “when will you stop”, and he replied “will come back every now and then to let people know I am still around.” The true beauty is the fact that he never left and continues to bless the people with gems that capture the essence of what graffiti writing all about.

Not much needs to be said about this classic slice of old school from 85. All the UK's most well known crews are on stage, as well as some not so well known acts. Highlights are the all the bboy crew showcases and the massive battle at the end were they dance to "Gunsmoke Breakout" of which a rip of the vinyl can be found here . K.I.D demo tape, made shortly after !Hey Hey Can you relate?" was released. K.I.D went onto recording a full Lp for Kold Sweat, and certain tracks for this appeared on the Raw Flavours compilation Lps also on Kold Sweat. (Check out the little kid on the intro to Fatal Attraction by KID, its his son, Marcus, who was bout 4 when he recorded it). I have the LP on mp3 and will up it if theres enough interest

Solid Steel Presents: Sesame Street

Well this is a turn up for the books - what's Sesame Street doing on Ninja Tune? Just in time to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their very first show in the US, Sesame Street & Ninja Tune have teamed up to release a super rare disco remix by Larry Levan and the previously unavailable and much loved 'Pinball Number Count' by The Pointer Sisters.

It all started a couple of years ago when Strictly Kev, part of DJ Food, desperately wanted to include the infamous 'Pinball Number Count' on the first 'Solid Steel Presents' mix CD. You know the track, it was super funky and was accompanied by the cool animation of a pinball rolling around strange landscapes. Now this track is the stuff of legends within beat digging circles, DJs have scoured record bins for decades in the hope of finding it included on old Sesame compilations but alas, it was never on any of them.

Fortunately Kev knew this and rang Sesame Workshop in New York asking for a copy of the tape. It never actually made it onto the mix CD but that's another story. What you have here is a composite of numbers
2-12 of the 'Pinball Number Count' animations (number 1 was never created). Kev has re-edited all the key elements and cleaned up the sound while he's at it. And cooing those syncopated numbers and "do-do's" in the background is only the Pointer Sisters on a session
singing assignment.

If that wasn't enough, also included on the release is an extremely rare disco mix of 'C is For Cookie' by Cookie Monster (the original can change hands for up to £100). This fantastic remix is by the late Larry Levan; DJ legend and driving force behind the New York club,The Paradise Garage for 10 years. Many people credit Larry as being the first DJ to play a very eclectic and open-minded mix of music. This was the first remix he did before going on to have a very successful studio career,introducing the dub aesthetic into dance music. As he said at the time "Mel Cheren one day said to me 'you want to mix a record?' There was this song from Sesame Street, called 'C Is For Cookie', and I mixed it, not serious, not getting paid for it or nothing"

Finally, the last track is another beat diggers break nugget and an alternate disco mix of 'C Is For Cookie'. This time late Manhattan disco DJ Roy Thode was the man controlling the faders. Involved in the NY disco scene in the 70's he did remixes for Vanguard Records
and was resident at clubs like 12 West and the Saint. His remix is full of thumping disco breaks that make this more than your average kids record and rounds the package off beautifully.

The blog is proud to hook with NYC photographer Dea, who is part of the Jazzmedia Collective. They are a group of talented photographers who document hip hop, but focus not on the bling but the talent. Dea is very privilaged in that he gets media passes for alot of the concerts and live events in NYC and recently managed to capture legend Big Daddy Kane in action a few months ago. The file sizes of these photos are huge, but I have managed to trim them down in order to make a nice photo package.
I hope to feature some of the collectives work , featuring artists such as Rakim and including photos of recent NYC events. He has been invited to Kool Mo Dee's 30th anniversary where Mo Dee, Doug E Fresh, Kane and other guests are performing. Here is a selection of artists the collective have managed to capture of the last 8 months or so, giving you some never seen before photos of legends on and off stage.

This is a pure example of what the italian funk is. Original score for “Sangue Di Sbirro” aka “Bloody Avenger” italian mob movie filmed in NY in the late 70s with George Easman, Jack Palance and Jenny Tamburi and directed by Alfonso Brescia.
