Im tired as fuck, cos the UK is 6 hours ahead of Nashville, plus I got lots of internet catching up to do!
As soon as I get some juicy stuff to share, its bizz as usual.
Plus..what the hell is Nashvilles obsession with guns?
..the burgers ruled.
Jetlag is a bitch

Work trip.
I will be away in Philly and Nashville next week working, so there will be a lack of updates on the blog. Hopefully Lennie will be able to record the radio show next friday so I can up it on my return. See it as a chance to catch up with things you might have missed rather than a period where nothing happens!
See you when I get back....

Audible Mainframe - Framework (2004)
Real nice LP, which is listenable all the way through.
The caffiend track at the end draws a clever comparison between coffee and hard drugs and is a spoken story , rather than a rhymed one, and keeps your attention throughout.
I feel the future of hip hop music for me is similar to the music found on this LP.
Rappers with live funk bands.
Look out for Scare the Normals coming out of the UK who will blow up this year if they can produce stuff like this! Big up Ill Inspired and Chrome of Deftex.

Bristol native and ex-member of Parlour Talk has worked with many artists here and there including Gunshot & Portishead. His style is funky, upbeat, yet moody and reaks of experience.Suprisingly, the only place I have seen this for sale is in Japan for an absolutely ridiculous price, but convienently converted to cd.
CD feat doesnt sound the same does it? Grab some history..

Amsterdam Graffiti- the battle of Waterloo
Amsterdam was were European graffiti was born. And in the middle of this was Waterloopein, a legendary fame which been painted since 1978, when it all began. In Amsterdam Graffiti we follow the evolution, how the punks started taging in the late 70s and to the 80s were this fame was the place were writers from other countries copies the styles from Shoe, Delta, Rhyme and Joker. This book is a must for anyone who likes to know what graffit was when it started in the 'dam, as there is an extensive look at how it began. The makers of this book must have really searched for those pics from the 70s.
If you download this book, then you simply must see the film to accompany this book, which can be found in a previous post on this very blog here

Maclaim: Finest Photorealistic Graffiti
I finally got around to getting myself a copy of Maclaim: Finest Photorealistic Graffiti and it’s a great book. It’s a fine book and an insightful look into the Maclaim crew with I can imagine that many of the more hardcore graffiti writers would probably not be too impressed with the thought of using masking tape, stencils and pieces of string for make shift compasses but I think there’s definitely a place for people turning out this kind of photorealistic aerosol artistry. There are small introductions to each of artists in Maclaim, loads of images from projects over the years and some very interesting painting lessons too. There is of course a whole heap of production pieces that they’ve done together too that make this book a real winner if you’re into this kind of thing. Bear in mind, this book is what it states: graff that looks like still life. Imagine Dahli with a can and your half way there.
Top stuff.

A funk special, with tracks complete with the original vinyls snap crackles and pops! The dustier the better, as some of hip hops original samples and breaks are played. Nothing too obscure as I am saving that for another mix. The Reuben Wilson track in this mix was used on Rawbzilla's section of the b-boy film " Detours", and even the producers of the film didnt know what it was called, so I went on a mission to find it..and voila!

zulu beat shows
Afrika Islam's original Hip Hop radio show The Zulu Beat ran from 1983-1985 on WHBI, Staten Island NYC. This was the first established Hip Hop radio show ever. The show, which mixed together early rap records from that period together with a heavy selection of beats being cut-up for the B-Boys who would be tuning in. Donald D was the MC on the original Zulu Beat radio show. The show showcases the original sound of Bambaataa, who was known for his varied musical tastes, but always had that elusive lp label covered, so when the break hit, you went nuts tryin to find who it was.
WHBI was the station that hosted Mr. Magic's pioneering format. Zulu Beat, broadcast on Wednesdays from 1-3 PM, according to the UK's P Brothers (who some years ago released a tribute mix), 'was the first to mix a true hip-hop selection of electro, soul, funk, reggae and a heavy dose of breakbeats,' its circulating tapings being 'important in relaying the true musical blueprint of hip-hop beyond the few imported electro records that were available to buy in England at the time. More than anything else, tapes of the Zulu Beat show introduced a lot of people outside of the USA to the importance of breakbeats, and they also showed that a hip-hop DJ selection is made up of different musical styles beyond just rap records. Copies of the show tapes travelled and so also helped spread the word of the mighty Universal Zulu Nation and the knowledge and science of hip-hop that goes beyond the music itself.'
Heres a few recording of the show that you will need Realplayer to hear.

Razorcuts
Razorcuts is a name that was created in part at least by Ninja Tunes' Strictly Kev for DJ and producer Peter Darrington, when he misheard what was being said in a conversation about one of Pete's new projects.Pete began DJ'ing in 1984, busting the motors in his parents' 'music centre' turntable system within weeks...by 1986 feeding his love for Original funk break classics had become a full time occupation. His professional music career took a turn for the strange, (or so it would seem to some) as he spent 5 years recording and touring with British art guitar trailblazers 'Cable'.But, like McClaren and Bambaataa before him, Peter as always found punk rock and hip hop are different sides to the same coin and had always believed they could live together in harmony, or at the very least, a healthy suspicion of each other, just like in his record collection. He began recording alone as Razorcuts in 2004 with his first 12" released on Soundly Beaten of London. He also records with Neil Cooper of Therapy? under the name 'Cut Hustlers'.
Personally, I have known Pete since the late 80s, and eventually bought some of his early hip hop collection and turntables off him in the early 90s. Hes always been one of those who was always at the same jams as you, and was always spotted in the DJ booth spinning breaks , even at the early jams in 86 onwards.
Just really wanted to say a massive "orate youth!" to Pete and put some his work out there to those who may not of heard about his stuff.
These are just snippets of his work, recorded in low quality so you knpow what that means.
Go out an buy his shit. That means leaving the house y'know.
Big up Pete.

Why is some of the best hip hop coming out of all places..Japan? Is it that fact they have a stupid amount of vinyl shops over there? Probs.
DJ Mu-R is part of DJ crew Gagle, from Sendai, who first came out to perform at the Korean event B-Boy in the Park in 2007, and this DJ crew certainly is transcending any language barriers.

INFAMY- graff doc
Doug Pray’s last documentary was 2001’s Scratch, a behind-the-scenes look into the world of hip-hop DJs and turntablism. This most recent documentary is an intense journey into the lives, minds and families of seven individuals who are obsessed with graffiti and follow that obsession into the most unexpected places. The film covers LA’s SABER, New York’s EARSNOT and CLAW, Phily’s ENEM, LA’s TOOMER and SF’s JASE. There’s also Joe Connolly the man who makes the removal of Los Angeles graffiti his daily passion.

Masterscratch series: Crucial mixes 1 and 2
1984, and hip hop had hit the Uk big time. I lived in the middle of nowhere and the best way to get an idea of what was happening was to go to Nottinghams Rock City, a club that saw hundreds of bboys meet every saturday between 12pm and 3pm to listen to new records and to battle each other. The resident DJs were Jonathon who also worked in Arcade records, (the only place to get the usa hip hop import vinyl at the time), and also Dj Masterscratch. Masterscratch put together mix tapes in his bedroom, putting a few hundred quids worth of vinyl onto one TDK C90, which he mass produced and sold at the Rock City jams for five quid a tape. These always sold out very quickly and became the soundtrack that many local bboys practiced to or even learnt about hip hop from.
These tapes are local legend, and as many as 25 tapes were made spanning the years, with alternate version of the songs making it ontoa different series of tapes called the "rock city" tapes, of which stopped around number 14 i think. Also 5 crucial megamixes were made, bringing together the most favourite beats in 2 45 min mixes on one tape.
I have always made it my mission to collect a full set of these tapes ,both masterscratch and rock city tapes, and I have all except masterscratch 1 and 2, and the last rock city tape.
As you can expect, these tapes have seen some MAJOR playing time over the years, and the quality varies wildly, from an original tape to a generation 8 recording.
I hope to be posting up these gems as and when I get chance to rip them. I know there are collectors out there who are still fiending for these, so hold tight for a walkthrough some of 83-86 real old school underground faves.
Heres the first 2 tape rips, crucial mixes 1 and 2, which have been digitally enhanced in order to make them as clean as possible.
This series is dedicated to those bboys I used to break with and all those I met at the jams at Rock City over the years, and met up with again at the reunion jam

bodes and hypes.
im a massive fan of all of Vaughn Bodes stuff, so here I present a few of the Cheech wizard comics and a copy of Junkwaffel.
Also a few issues of that classic Austrailian graff mag Hype, which was for me , the world first proper all in colour graff mag. I first started collecting this mag at number 3, and went upto number 20 when the craze for collecting graff mags went out. It was then I wenT back and got hold of all the issues that were ever made.

coming soon: radio archive update
I will be uploading all my old shows to my rapidshare account in the next few days, so if anyone wants to grab my old shows from 07 and 08, full of dj mixes and some exclusive tracks, then they will be available again shortly. There are a few that will require splitting as the file size is over 200mb due to the length ( the birthday show was 7 hours long), bear with me and all will be uploaded soon.
