Osymyso (real name Mark Nicholson) is a musician and DJ from the United Kingdom who specializes in the genres of bastard pop and breakbeat. He has been making music since 1994, but he released his first album, Welcome to the Pailindrome, in 1999. Songs which he has created include "Pat n Peg", which manages to turn an argument between two Eastenders characters into a track through the looping of the shouts You bitch! and You cow! and the addition of a hip hop beat, and "Intro-Inspection", which brought the genre of bastard pop to its logical extreme. In a 2002 front page survey of the genre, The New York Times remarked on "Intro-Inspection" and called Osymyso "one of the most popular bootleg artists".
"Intro-Inspection" is a bastard pop song by Osymyso. It sets itself apart from other songs of its genre by putting together the intros to one hundred different, well-known songs -- all by different artists, no less -- into a twelve-minute long song.
Intro-Inspection was never officially released, although there was a very limited number of CDs and Vinyl copies printed. It therefore never entered any official charts. Some MP3s in circulation are tagged "Intro-Introspection", repeating the first two syllables, but this is an error.
This isnt Hip Hop, but you have to admire the amount of pop song digging gone into this, the structure of the whole thing and how it reminds you of your youthful years....which is what old school is all about.
And here it is...for you to download right here.

dusty fingers Lps
These Volumes are absolutely killer. These fantastic comps comprise of full length original tunes from the 60s & 70s that have been sampled by hip-hop producers and artists. Depending on your knowledge of hiphop/rap, you may recognise some (or all!) of the samples used. But the best thing about these LPs is that you don't have to recognise any of the samples or even like rap music to appreciate the killer tunes on these LPs. Every damn track is an absolute killer - containing smooth grooves, mad, mad beats, library music tracks and tracks from obscure 60s/70s soundtracks.

alte schule: the german old school
This compilation unites some of Germany’s early heads, mainly from their city of Heidelberg, such as AC, Stieber Twins (dope producers, writers and then budding MCs), Boulevard Bou (who drops one in Turkish) with other old farts like producer and battle rapper Scopemann (of Rude Poets and STF), DJ Stylewarz of Bremen’s hardcore crew No Remorze, Zebroc Ski aka Zebster aka Akim Walta (who used to run MZEE, back when it was a fanzine, a label, a shop and basically THE platform for German hip-hop).
The odd one out on here is clearly MC René who, at the time must have been around 13 or 14. He was the freestyle Wunderkind from Braunschweig who left fans and the media hugely impressed with his energy and endless flows on stage, only to go on with a bunch of hit-or-miss singles and albums in the years that followed. Probably another case of freestyle-o-titis, i.e. dope live, but pretty unremarkable on vinyl. But that’s not the case with this track on here, mind you, and he represents “The new rhyme generation”.
The track on here that’s probably aged best is Torch’s “Kapitel 1″, which, in Germany has about the status that “The message” has, to which he refers.
“Ich weiss noch genau, wie das alles begann
The Message von Melle Mel war für mich wie ein Telegramm
und obwohl ich kein einziges Wort verstehen konnte, erkannte
ich was für ein Feuer in seinen Worten brannte…”
(I remember exactly how all this began
The Message by Melle Mel was to me like a telegram
and even though I couldn’t understand a single word I recognized
the fire burning in his words…)

TUGSB at the movies series: funk on film.
Back in the 70s, the music in the films was often a mirror image of the music on the street and clubs and what was hip at the time. In this series, I intend to post up some of the funkiest break and funk driven OSTs you ever heard. These LPs have been a source for DJs since the Britcore era of the early 90s, and some are still used today in the sample based production world. Lets start the ball rolling with the most famous and slip into obscurity as we go!

14 deadly secrets
Backspin in Germany put this together to give us an insight from DJ Premier on how he crafted just a few of the classics within his extensive discography. Man, this is a real dope compilation, listening to Primo recall the moment he became aware of Big L’s shooting is spine-tingling. Primo does a masterful job of keying in the listener, revisiting how he nearly tossed away the record that soon became “Nas Is Like” the same morning he gave birth to the beat. However, what I found most interesting was Primo describing Nas’ opening words to “N.Y. State Of Mind”. When Nas uttered the ad-lib to the opening of the classic cut, “yo, I don’t know how to start this shit”, Nas truly didn’t have the rhyme pattern down packed. All this going on while Primo was counting Nas in (”1,2,3″), long story short, the first verse you hear on “N.Y. State Of Mind” is basically Nas in one take…straight to wax…timeless! Sorry folks, unfortunately, this is a long MP3 track with no breaks between tracks. Still, at slightly over 33 minutes long, “14 Secrets of Primo” is a definite “must have”!
. “Words I Manifest”-Gang Starr2
. “Tha ? Remainz”-Gang Starr3
. “Nas Is Like”-Nas
4. “N.Y. State Of Mind”-Nas
5. “MC’s Act Like They Don’t Know”-Krs One

visual grafix 2
This one is for my man EZ of http://scottishgraffiti.blogspot.com/, mainly cos i used to write to him in the early 90s, and also cos hes in this video. Visual Grafix was the UKs first (and only) regular graffiti video magazine, which spanned some 15 odd issues plus specials like steel injection etc. As the series went on , the quality of the graffiti improved, the music got better and the actual production of the video itself got better. Here for download is number 2, taken from a very old copy in 1991, so its a bit choppy in places, but holds out so you can still see whats happening.
Use WinRAR or 7Zip to put the archives back together.

RECAP
Sorry for the lack of recent updates, but I have been in Berlin this week. If you are in Berlin and want to check out the Berlin wall, I managed to get a tag up on the Berlin wall with the myspace web address on in the middle of the afternoon surrounded by tourists taking pictures. The tag is next to Skki, near checkpoint charlie if you are in the area.
Incase you missed it, are new to the site or dont know how to navigate this site, direct links to all the posts are down on the right hand side.
Seems I have been getting a few emails asking "how do I get this and that?" Use the index, and you can see all the older posts.
I am busy chopping up more dvds so I can make some blog promos to slap up on youtube etc and other sites

the ice opinion
I read this book after reading Iceberg Slim's last novel DoomFox and found that Ice T had written an incredible and very telling introduction. A friend of mine recently asked me `hey, why are reading that?' and with a tone that inferred that there was probably nothing to be gained or redeemable from the book whatsoever. I was a little shocked, but I guess that's probably how some people would approach a book like this ... with really low expectations. I guess that aint too bad if all you expect out of T anymore is Law & Order re-runs on cable. But speaking for myself, I came with an open mind and I wasn't let down at all ... and I happen to like his character on Law & Order enough not to be "hater". T raps a lot of what he's saying in the experience of the Los Angeles Riots that occurred in 1992, his time on the streets and his strange but fortunate journey to being famous. But reading his words 16 years later, everything that plagued the city and was a major problem back then, is still up in the forefront of seemingly unsolvable problems and on the front page and not just for Black culture, as he pointed out then, but for most cultures as it is now. Los Angeles comes off as the beautiful place that it is, for some, but as a jail cell for others, even while they all `equally' enjoy their so-called freedoms. T paints the picture of the inner city that you may have thought has vanished but is still as dark, depressed and full of struggle as it was back in the 70's. Ice T started off in the military but moved on to a career in burglary and other nefarious activities that he very candidly re-tells, but does so without glorifying crime or the machismo behind his decisions. Ice T tells it like it is and this is a difficult to find book now .
So who else to sit and actually read this book to you than the author himself
Ice T.

rapidshare is your friend..aka ill links list pt2.
Lets face it, theres more hip hop out there than I could ever link you to, upload, and share with you in my lifetime, so I have tried to do as much as I can. Here is a real long list of films, some classic, some new, that I was thinking about embedding in the blog, but thought you would like to download them at your own leisure
Some absolute classics in here. If your really picky like me, you might want to skip some of the commercial stuff like Eminem, Jay Z, PE, and ShitPac Shakur concerts, although they might be worth a look for some people.
Stand out films i would definately recommend you download straight away are Infamy, awesome graff doc, aerosol planet vol 1, scribble jam 2 and the MC movie.
Take your time..the links arent going anywhere and neither are the files. You might need a new hard drive. Thank me later.

Kool DJ Herc at BroadwayJoes 1-1-01
.DJ Kool Herc was the earliest major figure to emerge from the mid-70's Bronx music scene that would eventually come to be known as Hip-Hop. Born Clive Campbell in Kingston, Jamaica, Herc immigrated to New York City and was exposed at an early age to both American and Jamaican musical traditions. Influenced by soul, rock, funk, reggae and dancehall, DJ Kool Herc staged parties that spawned a global youth culture, rooted in the African American experience. As a teenager Campbell borrowed his father's massive sound system to throw block parties that brought together his west Bronx community, often until dawn. DJ Kool Herc didn't invent hip-hop's musical aesthetic as much as he unearthed it, buried in the drum breaks of soul and funk records. Realizing that dancers became most energized during the parts of songs where the sole instrumentation was percussion, Herc used two copies of the same record to endlessly loop a beat, driving the dance-floor crazy. During performances, to further excite the crowd, Herc’s crew of hype-men, in the style of Jamaican dancehall toasting, would recite rhymes over the microphone, pioneering the art of rapping. These innovations would gain Herc notoriety across the five boroughs, leading him to club performances around the city for a wide spectrum of audiences.Though his contemporaries, most notably Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa, would improve on Herc's advancements, DJ Kool Herc stands as the originator, without whom an entire generation would lack a soundtrack.

Hard times Good times Better times
Hard Times, Good Times, Better Times. The history and rise of graffiti in Amsterdam. The story tells the happenings of Amsterdam writers from the very early pioneering days of the 'Dam graff scene in the punk era to the first artists frm USA who made the trip over to the first Walls of Fame. The end scene really hits home once you have absorbed the whole film and have understood its origins.
This film is the Style Wars of the 'Dam scene. Deffo worth the watch.

Style Wars
New York's legendary Kings of Graffiti own a special place in the hip hop pantheon. Style Wars is regarded by many as the definitive document of the emerging hip hop culture, an emblem of the original, embracing spirit that burst forth to the world from underground tunnels, uptown streets, clubs and playgrounds.
The film chronicles an extraordinary epoch of youthful creativity and civic controversy. Teenage graffiti artists made New York City's ramshackle subway system their public playground, battleground, and spectacular artistic canvas. Opposing them were Mayor Edward Koch, the police, and the Transit Authority. As MC's and DJs rocked the city with new sounds, street corner B-boy breakdance battles became performance art. Today this superbly photographed, world-acclaimed, prizewinning film, newly hailed at New York's Tribeca Film Festival, and in Europe from Berlin to Barcelona, is more timely than ever. The phrase "New York, 1982" (the superimposed title that starts the film) has itself become a code for a legendary time of heroic teenage exploits, a touchstone for successive generations of youth worldwide, many of whom can recite the film's dialogue by heart.

Virus graff mag no 38
Not really into the graff mag scene any more, as I have become what I call a graffiti snob. I hate most modern styles, the offbalance look, thin going into fat back into thin, top heavy letters, and disjointed characters. Moan over. Enjoy.

video: Soul Tip
I have done some digging and I have converted some video lately. The VHS tapes revealed some gems and I will be sharing them over the next few weeks.
Fist off, heres Blue Eyes doing Soul Tip live in Germany in1994. The vibe that night wasnt a good one and it wasnt a friendly club at all, infact the sets were shorter than normal, so the groups could get back into the van in one piece.

Cortex "volume 2" (1977)
It really is another absolute killer album of dope jazz/funk tracks, full of breakbeats and swirling rhodes lines that you can't get enough of! Unlike their first album it's all instrumental (save for a few chants on "Poxa") and lean even more heavily on the groove side, in a funky blaxpoitation kind of way. Too many good tracks to mention— Aaah, for once we can be proud of some french music!

bring the noise 2000
Chuck D originally put these remixes on the official PE site in 1998 but was forced to remove them by Polygram. To be honest, I haven't liked much from PE since Apocalypse 91, but, as evidenced by the article below, Chuck was dead on about the future of the mp3:From an article (from 1998)on the same site:Public Enemy leader Chuck D is speaking out about the record industry's stance against the MP3 file format. He tells Billboard Bulletin that the Def Jam act's attempt to post "Bring The Noise 2000" -- an unreleased collection of songs and remixes -- for free digital download at www.public-enemy.com was an act of defiance against the music industry. Four of the set's 27 songs were posted in MP3; the tracks were removed from the site shortly after news broke of their availability. "That we don't like the way [PolyGram] has been handling the album, that goes without saying," says Chuck D of Def Jam's parent. "But the bigger picture is the entire industry and the legal aspect of the game skewing toward executives and against the creative. There are tons of artists that are having the same problems, but now we're in a situation where the industry can't pimp this technology like they've pimped every other form of technology. [The labels] invented the wild, wild west, and now that everybody's got a gun, what are they gonna do?"Neither Def Jam nor PolyGram would comment. Noted hip-hop producer Gary G-Wiz, who worked with Chuck D on the MP3 postings, claims that the project is a promotional effort and will not hurt retail sales. Chuck D says he will use MP3 again in the future."I'm gonna ride the MP3 like a mutha-f----n' cowboy riding a burro," says the veteran rapper.

dj mix: united states of audio
As used on last weeks show, I played 95% of this mix, which seemed to go down very well with all listeners. United States of Audio is well known for his eclectic and creative DJ mixes, which have been featured on numerous radio shows worldwide including Coldcut’s legendary Solid Steel show and Hamburg's Back to the Basics. Based in the city of Bristol, UK he plays out regularly in the city's bars and clubs as well as making guest appreances at nights around the UK. Refusing to be pigeon-holed into one genre he likes to mix things up a bit on the decks so expect to hear funk, hip-hop, electronica, ska, reggae, dub, rock, soul, disco, electro and everything else in between! United States of Audio started DJ-ing whilst still at school. His passion for hip hop began sometime before that when a friend introduced him to De La Soul’s classic album ‘3 Feet High and Rising’ back in the late 80s. After finally being able to afford some decks, he cut his teeth producing countless mixtapes and playing at numerous parties in and around his hometown of Southampton. He’s come a long way since then and as his skills have developed so has his diverse rcollection! Thanks to Dave aka USOA for this weeks mix.

invasion of the old school
As promised in the last post, I wanted the newer generation of heads to experience what I like to refer to as "the old school". For me the old school is a period I will love till death, as its the time i first discovered hip hop. Ok so it wasnt as old school as the new york originators in the 70s, but I feel 83 onwards is old school for the UK. I wont even pretend for a minute that these recording are all my own work, but I felt it very important to go way back and refelct on what hip hop was, rather than say what it is today.
Its battle time on the underground blog.
Old school style.
You wont be able to hear these recordings on vinyl as most of these have been converted from tape from waaaay back.
And sorry, but I cannot re-up them as they are not my own works!
Get em while they is hot!

I love this record. I play this when Im feeling really down about the state of rap music today, as I can picture Cool J going all out performing the title tune as seen in the film " Krush Groove!". If thats not real rap right there, I dont know what is. For me, this record IS rap music. It represents the time when rap was on the verge of being the biggest influence of modern music. OK, so it doesnt sample a great deal, something that modern music doesnt do today. But theres one thing missing now days that this has.
Passion to be the best.
Wheres the passion to be No1? I realise thats all past now with alot of unity in the scene, but theres fuck all wrong with an MC coming out with braggin battle raps, especially when delivered like this.
Fuck, Im gonna post some old school battles next if I can find em.
Enjoy this shit. This is as classic as it gets.

note to self..
Christ!, Avoid the new Kool G Rap Lp like Eric Cartman with full blown final stage AIDS. I still rate G Rap, but jesus, who the fuck did the production on his latest offering?
Im not even gonna up it it offends my ears so much.
Since when did G Rap get all dirrrrrrrtty south on us? Bring back the days of the butcher shop. If this is hip hop evolution, I would rather be stuck in the stone age. Hell, I would rather G Rap release the LP with no music. Tell the person who produced the LP that theres this old machine called a sampler, and that casio keyboards well and truly belong in the 80s. I have heard of old school production, but G Rap, note to self for the next LP, get some experienced hip hop producer like Premier on your next shit, instead some dude who thinks your new shit "will appeal to the street" as it s the new sound.
Disappointed doesnt even come close.

hip hop : a street history
This is hard to get hold of on VHS now. When this was made in 83, hip hop in the bronx had already happened. Hip hop was spawned in the early 70s. It really is weird looking at this film as a second coming. when I remember watching it for the first time in the uk on BBC2, it was the newest shit out.
Some people may have problems getting this google video link to play. If you search for it on google video, it will pop up.

Jurassic 5 discography
J5 are one of my fave groups ever, as they keep the original feeling of the live group of mcs onstage. Dont know what I mean? Go check the film wildstyle and look the Fantastic Freaks at the Dixie (which is probably the best bit in the film for me). for proof. They put across the old school is the best way..with a new school twist. DJs Numark and Cut Chemist really shine on the production of the first 3 LPS, but when Cut Chemist left to persue a solo DJ career, the production really suffered, and to this end, I feel their latest LP offering is weak compared to others. So many good track are on the first 3 lps, it really is hard to single out my faves, but "concrete schoolyard", "a day at the races" ft big daddykane and "whats golden" really stand out for me.
For me, the first 3 lps are hard to beat, as they rep the old school while living in a new school era, something I live myself. What do you thing of J5? Comments and feedback welcome via the comments box.

Enjoy, and dont forget to also download the radio show as well! Link is on the right hand side of the blog. Look for the tag "radio show archive"
